Brief History of 126 Overall Rd, Bentonville, VA 22610Present day Overall, VA was settled by John Overall in 1740 to look for silver and copper in the Shenandoah Valley. He cleared fields, built a plantation house (present day 126 Overall Rd), and married Maria Froman the granddaughter of one of the Valley~s original settlers Jost Hite (The Hite family built Belle Grove Plantation with the design assistance of Thomas Jefferson). In 1817 ~Milford~ was incorporated by Virginia at the junction of Overall Creek and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. After the civil war ~Milford~ was renamed ~Overall~ In 1833, Isaac Overall the grandson of John Overall bought an additional 28,000 acres (44 square miles) that stretched from Bentonville south to Stanley in Page County and across the Blue Ridge mountain to present day Sperryville. Isaac Overall was also the first sheriff of Warren County. Isaac passed away in 1843 and is buried along with John Overall and other family members in the cemetery that borders the property. In 1848 Dr. Zachariah Compton bought the original John Overall house and tore it down to build a new ~Plantation- Style House in its place~. The basement foundation of 126 Overall Rd is believed to be from John Overall~s original house dating from approximately 1790 based on historical plats and records. Dr. Compton~s house was built in the traditional ~two over two style~ During the civil war Milford / Overall was a confederate stronghold that played an important role in slowing the union advances. The house was used as a field hospital during the battles of Milford in 1864. The land included with 126 Overall Rd is part of the Battlefield of Milford which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (093-5023)The rear section of the house (Dining Room, Master Bedroom, Kitchen, Porches, etc.) has been dated to circa 1900. The property includes 6 acres and has 712 ft of frontage on Overall Run. Because this house is sold with 6 acres, if the future owners have an agriculture use such as chickens, horses, or cows, they could qualify for ~Land Use Tax~ Status and significantly reduce property taxes. The surrounding property and part of the 6 acres being sold is part of a Virginia Outdoors Foundation Conservation Easement protecting the land for further development.Recent Renovations 2012 ~ Extensive renovation / preservation work throughout house. Plumbing and Electrical were updated to current code. 2017-2019 ~ All appliances (Washer, Dryer, Refrigerator, Stove, Dish Washer & 2 mini-split HVAC systems) and plumbing fixtures have been replaced with coordinated and thoughtfully selected items. Master Bathroom & Kitchen have both been renovated.
